Blank hoodies: weight, styles and what to print on them

Updated 14 September 2026 · Prices checked 14 September 2026

A hoodie is the most worn piece of merch, so the blank matters. This guide covers fabric weight, pullover vs zip, which print and embroidery methods work on fleece and what blank hoodies cost when you buy a few or a box full.

Quick answer

A good blank hoodie for printing is a cotton-rich fleece of approx. 240 to 280 gsm, for example 80 % cotton and 20 % polyester. Pullover hoodies give a large flat print area on front and back, zip hoodies suit a small chest logo or embroidery plus a back print. At Marmalade Co. a Fruit of the Loom hoodie costs €20.95, €18.86 each from 5 pieces, the zip hoodie €27.95. Delivery goes to Ireland and 10 EU countries, not to the UK.

What is a blank hoodie?

A blank hoodie is a plain hooded sweatshirt with no print, logo or label on the outside. Printers, clubs, schools, small brands and event organisers buy them to add their own design by screen printing, DTF, vinyl or embroidery.

Most blank hoodies are made from sweat fleece: smooth on the outside, brushed and soft on the inside. The smooth face is what you print on, the brushed back is what keeps it warm.

What gsm is best for a blank hoodie?

Hoodies are much heavier than T-shirts. As a rough guide:

Weight classApprox. gsmFeelGood for
Lightweightapprox. 240Light, easy to layerSpring and autumn, events, DTF
Classicapprox. 280Warm, substantialClub and school hoodies, screen printing, embroidery
Heavyweightapprox. 320 and upThick, structuredPremium streetwear merch

Fruit of the Loom's Classic Hooded Sweat is approx. 280 gsm in 80 % cotton and 20 % polyester, and the Lightweight Hooded Sweat is approx. 240 gsm. The polyester share helps the hoodie keep its shape and reduces shrinking.

Pullover or zip hoodie: which should you choose?

Many groups mix: pullover hoodies for members, zip hoodies for coaches or staff, both with the same back print.

Which print methods work on hoodies?

Sublimation is not an option on cotton-rich hoodies. For a full method comparison see screen printing vs DTF.

Where should the print go on a hoodie?

Keep the design above the pocket seam on a pullover, usually 7 to 10 cm below the neckline. On the back, a design approx. 25 to 30 cm wide suits most adult sizes. Avoid the hood and the side seams, and press on a flat pad so the pocket does not create an uneven surface.

Popular placements for group hoodies:

Combining a small front logo with a big back print gives a professional look without making the hoodie stiff across the chest.

How do you wash a printed hoodie?

Wait approx. 24 hours after printing or pressing. Then wash inside out at 30 to 40 °C, without fabric softener, and let it dry flat or on a hanger instead of the tumble dryer. That protects both the print and the brushed inside. For sizing a group order, see the size guide.

Frequently asked questions

What gsm should a blank hoodie be?
For everyday merch approx. 240 to 280 gsm works well. Around 240 gsm feels lighter and suits layering or spring and autumn. Around 280 gsm feels warmer and more substantial and handles screen printing and embroidery well. Fruit of the Loom's Classic Hooded Sweat is approx. 280 gsm, the Lightweight Hooded Sweat approx. 240 gsm.
Can you use DTF on hoodies?
Yes. DTF transfers work on cotton, polyester and blends, so a typical 80/20 fleece is fine. Press on a flat area, avoid the pocket seam and the hood, and follow the transfer maker's settings. Pre-press the hoodie for a few seconds first to remove moisture. After pressing, wait approx. 24 hours before the first wash.
Pullover or zip hoodie for printing?
A pullover hoodie has an uninterrupted front, which is ideal for a large chest print. A zip hoodie splits the front, so designs are usually a small left chest logo or embroidery plus a big back print. Zip hoodies look smarter for staff wear, pullovers are the classic choice for clubs, schools and events.
Where can I buy wholesale hoodies?
Many garment wholesalers sell to trade customers only and show prices ex VAT. Marmalade Co. sells Fruit of the Loom hoodies from 1 piece at €20.95 incl. VAT, 10 % less from 5 pieces (€18.86). Delivery is €7 by DHL to Ireland and 10 EU countries. The shop does not currently deliver to the UK.
