Which print method suits your quantity?

The right method depends mostly on the number of pieces, the number of colours and the fabric. Here is the rule of thumb:

MethodWorth it fromFabricIdeal for
Heat transfer vinyl (HTV)1 pieceCotton, blends, polyesterNames, numbers, simple logos in 1 to 2 colours
DTF transfer1 pieceCotton, blends, polyesterFull-colour designs in small runs, also to press at home
DTG1 pieceBest on 100 % cottonPhotos and gradients on one-offs
Screen printingapprox. 30 to 50 piecesCotton, blendsClub and company shirts, merch, very durable prints
Sublimation1 pieceLight polyester onlySports tops, all-over designs
Embroidery1 piece (set-up cost per design)Heavier fabricsLogos on polos, hoodies and sweatshirts

What should you check before buying blanks?

  • Fabric: 100 % cotton is the all-rounder. Heather colours usually contain some polyester, which is fine for DTF and vinyl but less ideal for DTG.
  • Weight: light tees (approx. 145 gsm) feel airy, heavier ones (approx. 190 gsm and up) feel more premium and hold screen printing well. See heavy cotton T-shirts.
  • Side seams: tubular tees without side seams give an even print area.
  • Sizes: groups usually need XS to XXXL. How to split sizes is in the T-shirt size guide.
  • Total price and delivery: check VAT, delivery cost and, above all, whether the shop delivers to your country at all.

Frequently asked questions

Does Marmalade Co. deliver blank T-shirts to the UK?
No, not at the moment. Marmalade Co. delivers with DHL for €7 flat to Ireland, Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Spain, usually in about 2 to 3 working days. Orders cannot currently be shipped to England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. The printing and sizing guides on this site still apply to any blank you buy.
Which blank T-shirts are best for printing?
The easiest to print are T-shirts in 100 % cotton with a smooth surface and a weight of approx. 150 to 195 gsm. They take DTF, screen printing, DTG and vinyl well. Classic Fruit of the Loom tees are knitted as a tube with no side seams, so the print area stays even. For sublimation you need light polyester instead. More in blank T-shirts for printing.
Can I buy blank T-shirts as a private person?
Yes. Many garment wholesalers only sell to trade customers and show prices ex VAT. At Marmalade Co. anyone can order from 1 piece, prices include VAT and the quantity discount is applied automatically: 5 % from 3 pieces and 10 % from 5 pieces, which brings a T-shirt down to €6.26. Remember that delivery is limited to Ireland and selected EU countries.
From how many shirts is screen printing worth it?
As a rule of thumb from approx. 30 to 50 pieces per design. Screen printing needs a screen and set-up for every colour, and that cost is spread over the run. For smaller quantities DTF transfers or vinyl are usually cheaper and quicker. Always ask the printer for a total price including set-up. The full comparison is in screen printing vs DTF.
Can I use sublimation on cotton T-shirts?
No. Sublimation ink only bonds with polyester fibres, so on cotton the design looks faded and washes out quickly. Sublimation needs light garments with a high polyester content. For cotton tees choose DTF transfers, heat transfer vinyl, DTG or screen printing instead. The cotton blanks at Marmalade Co. are therefore not suitable for sublimation.
